The Northampton Street Bridge was designed by James Madison Porter III and built in 1896. It provides access between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Major renovations were required after flooding brought on by Hurricane Diane in 1955 washed out the center section. A Bailey bridge was installed while repairs were made. Celebrating its 100th birthday in 1996, the "free bridge" (there is no toll to cross), with its Gothic detail, is the last of its type in the United States and is a National Civil Engineering landmark.
