The Northampton Street Bridge was designed by James Madison Porter III and built in 1896. It provides access between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Major renovations were required after flooding brought on by Hurricane Diane in 1955 washed out the center section. A Bailey bridge was installed while repairs were made. Celebrating its 100th birthday in 1996, the "free bridge" (there is no toll to cross), with its Gothic detail, is the last of its type in the United States and is a National Civil Engineering landmark. Lehigh River & Delaware River Easton was founded in 1752 and is one of only three locations where the Declaration of Independence was read to the public. It was a military center during the Revolutionary War. It was a commercial center during the 19th century because the Delaware, Lehigh and Morris canal systems connected it to the coal and iron regions of the North and West and the commercial regions of Philadelphia and New York to the South and East.
